NEW YORK (Dagbladet): Russian media reports on thousands of arrests of immigrants across the country, writes Reuters.
According to the state-run Russian news agency RIA, 3,000 immigrants were arrested in St. Petersburg during the raids “to prevent crime.”
The police carried out large raids and arrested immigrants near subway stations and popular places for New Year’s celebrations in the center of the city, according to Moscow Times.
Brutal message: Warns of intensification
– It turned out that more than 600 of the immigrants have been in Russia with various violations of the immigration laws, a police source told the news agency.
More than 100 will now be at risk of being deported.
The Russian news website SOTA reports, among other things, that one of those arrested in Moscow was an immigrant from Tajikistan, who was dressed as Santa Claus.

More investigations
In the city of Chelyabinsk, Russia’s highest investigative body states that it has opened an investigation against three immigrants for “hooligan acts” against Russian soldiers and their spouses.
– A crowd of drunk immigrants attacked two young men, who had been demobilized from the front line. A soldier was beaten with a baton, writes the investigative agency on Telegram.
They also add that the immigrants insulted the wives of soldiers who have served in the war in Ukraine, which the Russian authorities refer to as a military special operation.
War is knocking at the door
The investigative body says it has also launched investigations into “illegal actions by immigrants” in the Sverdlovsk region and in the Moscow region.
Military service
Most of the immigrants in Russia come from neighboring countries in Central Asia, such as Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia in search of work.
Last year there were regular reports that police across Russia were arresting immigrants who had recently become citizens but had not completed the mandatory registration for the military. Several have been called up for military service on the spot, writes the Moscow Times.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said in December that the country has more than ten million migrant workers.
– It is not an easy problem, Putin said at his annual press conference, according to Reuters.
