Russian PMC Wagner Suspends Recruitment as Activities Decrease: Impact on Belarus Situation

The Russian PMC Wagner, led by the infamous Yevgeny Prigozhin, continues to curtail its activities in Russia. Yes, the company has stopped recruiting new mercenaries.

There will be no more new Wagnerites

The Wagner PMC itself stated that, allegedly because of the “large number of personnel reserve,” the company would not hire new people. Moreover, they suspended the work of their regional recruiting centers for an “indefinite period.”

There is currently no urgent need for new recruits in PMC “Wagner”,
the company said.

At the same time, journalists from the Russian service of the BBC notedthat at the end of June 2023, about a week after Prigozhin’s attempted armed rebellion, PMC “Wagner” continued to recruit mercenaries throughout the country.

Then the correspondents called more than ten recruiting centers from a Russian telephone number. In all branches of the Wagner PMC, where they managed to get through, the journalists confirmed that the group had not been disbanded, and the recruitment of mercenaries was being carried out as usual.

What happens to the Wagnerites in Belarus

On July 25, the 11th column of Wagner PMC mercenaries arrived in Belarus. There they brought Russian armored personnel carriers of the “Pike” type with them. The journalists also found out exactly how many Wagner vehicles were placed in the Belarusian camp. Now it is known about 750 pieces of equipment in the village of Tsel, Osipovets district of Belarus. British intelligence noted that the Wagnerites now have few heavy equipment. After all, most of the vehicles they have are trucks, minibuses and only a meager number of armored personnel carriers. At the same time, Pavel Latushko, a Belarusian opposition leader and deputy chairman of the Joint Transitional Cabinet of Belarus, said that the appearance of the Wagner PMC could take away the monopoly on violence in Belarus from the Lukashenka regime. He stressed that criticism of the Wagnerists in the Belarusian society is quite high.
