“Almost weekly”

A similar incident happened last Friday, August 9, when a Russian plane violated German airspace off the island of Rügen. According to the German newspaper Merkur, the plane flew without a flight plan and without contact with air traffic control.

According to the spokesperson of the German Air Force, airspace violations by Russian planes over the Baltic Sea have recently occurred almost weekly.

According to the German newspaper Bild, on August 3, the Russian plane was in the Baltic Sea on its way to Latvia. Also at that time, the German and Swedish air forces interfered with the operation of the Russian plane.

Last June, a Russian Su-24 plane violated Swedish airspace off Gotland, after which the Swedish planes were alerted to the air. At that time, Sweden’s foreign minister Tobias Billström condemned the airspace violation as “inappropriate”.

In the same week, four Russian planes violated Finnish airspace near Loviisa and Porvoo. Defense secretary Antti Häkkänen (kok) said that the suspected territorial violation is taken seriously.

In Finland, Ilta-Sanomat reported on the matter.
