Russian plane crashes in Mali, pilot killed

Bamako

A plane that Russia sent to the armed forces Mali fell near the city of Gao. As a result, the pilot of the plane died.

Reported AFPWednesday (10/5/2022), in a video showing the plane crashing at high speed before hitting a plume of smoke.

In a brief statement on social media, the Russian military confirmed that a plane crashed near Gao airport around 09:30 local time “on its way back from a mission to support the civilian population.”

The plane was a Sukhoi Su-25. However, military officials had previously identified the plane as an Albatros, a Czechoslovakian model from the Soviet era.

Neither the Sukhoi Su-25 nor the Albatross were among the aircraft delivered by Russia to the Malian army in August.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the plane was one of the “new acquisitions” of the Malian army.

It is understood that Mali’s junta, which took power in August 2020, has moved away from Mali’s traditional ally, France, towards Russia.

Kremlin support is in the form of ground operations. Including support for combat equipment such as helicopters and combat aircraft.
