Russian penitentiary service: Alexei Navalny is dead

Navalny is said to have been pronounced dead at the scene after several resuscitation attempts, according to the correctional service.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian media that it is not yet known what caused Navalny’s death. President Putin has reportedly been informed.

Kira Jarmysh, Navalny’s press secretary, says the team has not yet received confirmation of his death and that his lawyer is on his way to prison.

Navalny’s relatives demand answers

Navalny’s mother, Ludmila Ivanovna Navalnaya, writes on Facebook that she “does not want any condolences”.

“We met our son in prison on the 12th. He was alive, healthy and happy,” she writes.

Navalny’s wife, Yulia Navalnaya, has also spoken out. She says she doesn’t know if she believes her husband is dead.

– Putin and his government lie continuously. But if it is true, I want to tell Putin and his friends that they will not go unpunished, she says.

In early January, Navanlyj appeared in a Russian court. He then said that he felt well and that his conditions had improved.

Maria Zacharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, signs Telegram that the West’s accusations against Russia are unfounded.

“No forensic examination has taken place yet, but the West is already ready with its conclusions,” she writes.

Poisoned with nerve agent

In February 2021, Alexei Navalny was sentenced to prison for violating a suspended sentence. This after he returned to Russia after being poisoned with the nerve agent novichok, an attack believed to have been carried out by the Russian state.

He has since been placed in solitary confinement a total of 27 times, most recently on February 14 according to his relatives, had his sentence extended and was moved around between several Russian institutions. His team at several times did not know where he was.

Several actors, including the EU, have protested the treatment of Navalny and called the sentence against him political.
