Three Russian passenger planes were given special permission to briefly enter the airspace of Finland and Estonia to avoid thunderstorms, officials said today, quoted by DPA.
The European Union has closed its airspace to Russian aircraft as part of sanctions against Moscow following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which began in February last year.
The Russian aviation agency Rosaviatsia thanked its European neighbors for their help in a special statement, BTA reported.
All three flights – of the airlines “Rossiya”, “Ural Airlines” and “Nordwind” – were carried out yesterday to or from the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. Russian pilots usually have to fly over the Baltic Sea instead of through the airspace of EU member states.
The Finnish transport agency Fintraffic confirmed that exceptions were made due to bad weather.
