Russian Parliament Proposes Increase in Conscription Age to 30, Potential Impact on Armed Forces

The Russian parliament wants to increase the maximum age for conscription in the mandatory military service from 27 years to 30 years, Andrejs Kartapolovs, the head of the State Duma Defense Committee, announced on Friday, July 21.

The minimum conscription age will not be changed and will continue to be 18 years, the “Interfax” news agency reported, referring to Kartapolov. An increase in the minimum conscription age to 21 was previously considered.

Parliament still needs to approve the proposed change to the conscription age so that it can be applied from next spring.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu already indicated last year that such changes could occur. At the time, both the minimum and maximum enlistment ages were proposed to be raised, and observers believed that such a move would increase the strength of the armed forces from the current 1.15 million soldiers to 1.5 million.

Independent media said the new rules could increase Russia’s army by hundreds of thousands of new recruits.

Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Russian army has lost a large number of soldiers. According to Ukrainian news, the loss of life force of Russian troops in Ukraine reached 240,690 soldiers by Friday morning.
