Russian Opposition Leader Alexei Navalny Found Alive in Remote Arctic Prison; US and France Condemn Putin Regime’s Treatment

Moscow: Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who was missing from prison and a staunch critic of President Vladimir Putin, has been found alive. Those related to him stated that Navalny was transferred to the Polar Wolf Prison in the Penal Colony section of the Arctic region, far away from the prison where he was previously housed.

Navalny was found three weeks after he went missing. Penal colonies are places where prisoners are kept in solitary confinement. The general election in Russia is only three months away. Meanwhile, Navalny was transferred to a deserted prison. The US expressed its happiness that Navalny was found alive. The US has also condemned the Putin regime’s hunt for opposition in Russia, demanding Navalny’s early release. France condemned the transfer of Alexey to another prison.

Navalny’s discovery was reported by his follower Kira Yarmish through social media. Kira said Navalny is in the IK-3 penal colony in Kharp, an autonomous region in the Arctic region of Yemalo-Nenets. Kira added that Navalny had been visited by his lawyer and was fine.

Located above the Arctic Circle, Kharp has a population of 5000. It is one of the most remote colonies located in the northern tip of Russia. The temperature here is below zero degree. People here cannot connect with the outside world.

Navalny has been sentenced to more than 30 years of imprisonment in various cases. There was an assassination attempt on him in 2020. Navalny fell unconscious while traveling from Siberia to Moscow. It was then alleged that Navalny was poisoned. But Russia rejected all this. Navalny returned to life after 32 days of hospital stay. After being discharged from the hospital, he was again transferred to the jail.
