Alexei Navalny missed another hearing on Monday. The Russian opposition leader disappeared two weeks ago. Supporters are concerned about President Vladimir Putin’s best-known opponent.
Navalny is serving a years-long prison sentence. He was sentenced to this, among other things, for fraud. Outside Russia, the Kremlin is believed to have sidelined its biggest critic with a show trial.
In recent years, Navalny has been held in a heavily guarded penal colony in the Vladimir region. From there he regularly made himself heard on social media through his team. He also attended new hearings via video connection. That did not happen on Monday for the second time in a row.
Russian prison authorities initially said Navalny could not appear due to a power outage. Later it was reported that he is no longer in the prison in question. The judge then adjourned the hearing.
Navalny’s associates reported last week that he had been transferred to an unknown location in early December. They have had no contact since then. The fact that Navalny’s health has deteriorated recently adds to the concerns.
The Kremlin said it had “no information” about Navalny’s whereabouts now.
