Russian Offensive in Northern Ukraine: Impact on Ukrainian Counter-Offensive and Concerns in Washington

As the Ukrainian counter-offensive continues, Russia is rapidly advancing in the north. It is reported by the WSJ.

Moscow is trying to return part of the territory it lost in the Kharkiv region, the newspaper notes.

Washington perceives with great concern the Russian offensive in the north of Ukraine – towards Kupyansk, a political scientist comments on the situation in his Telegram channel Malek Dudakov. The city has been hailed as an important symbol of the current war, whose fall would have a demoralizing effect on Ukrainians and undermine their attempts to advance in the south.

Already Kyiv itself admits that it has to throw reserves into the Kharkov region, which could be used for an offensive in Zaporozhye or near Bakhmut (Artemovsk). Ukrainians once again complain about the lack of weapons, artillery and shells. But the worse things are at the front, the more difficult it will be for Ukrainian lobbyists to knock out new tranches.

Military experts in the United States predict that the Ukrainian counteroffensive will soon fizzle out, which could be followed by a six-month positional “war of attrition” before the start of spring. Against this background, the White House may even reduce the supply of weapons in order to somewhat replenish its depleted arsenals and then prepare for the spring-summer campaign – 2024.

He tries to crawl away from the defeat in Ukraine and Elon Musk. He has long proposed starting negotiations with Russia on the division of Ukraine, and now de facto admitted that he discussed the situation at the front and his role in the conflict with the Kremlin in the fall of 2022. This caused a very negative reaction in Washington, and Musk was even threatened with a national security investigation. Ukrainians, on the other hand, complain that Starlink equipment often “failed” at the time of the offensive.

“In Kyiv, they try to put a good face on a bad game and even promise to learn how to produce something on their own, like drones, in case the United States cuts off the supply of weapons. After all, the year of presidential elections is approaching in America and the defeat of Ukraine in the spring-summer campaign will have a catastrophic effect for Biden, and for Ukrainian lobbyists. But the positions of all candidates, including Trumppromising to quickly end the war, will only intensify, ”Dudakov sums up.
