The transit of Russian natural gas through Ukraine will resume after 2024 if there is demand from European consumers. This was stated by the Director of the Department of Economic Cooperation of the Russian Foreign Ministry Dmitry Birichevsky.
“When planning natural gas supplies in Russia, factors such as the presence of consumer demand and the operability of cross-border infrastructure are taken into account. It is this logic that will be guided when considering the issue of continuing Ukrainian transit,” Birichevsky said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
At the end of October 2023, Ukraine announced that won’t renew an agreement on the transit of Russian gas to Europe, which expires by the end of 2024. This was announced by the head of the Ukrainian Naftogaz, Alexey Chernyshov. According to him, Kyiv would like to terminate the contract at the present time, but cannot because of Europe. In August of this year, Ukraine refused enter into negotiations with the Russian Federation on the issue of extending the contract for gas transportation.
