Russian Musicians Return to Charts in Former Soviet Republics Thanks to “The Boy’s Word. Blood on the Asphalt” Influence

Russian artists, who dropped out of the music charts of the former Soviet republics in 2022, have returned to the charts in these countries. The reasons given were the decline in the politicization of culture and increased interest in the series “The Boy’s Word. Blood on the asphalt.” This was reported by RBC after analyzing the top ratings of the Apple Music service.

“Musicians from Russia managed to regain popularity in post-Soviet countries. Thus, nine out of the ten most listened to songs belong to Russians in Russia and Belarus itself,” says the RBC material. It is noted that there are eight songs in Moldova, seven in Armenia and Tajikistan, five in Kazakhstan, three in Ukraine, and two in Lithuania. In 2022, there was only one Russian track in the Ukrainian hit parade.

The head of the InterMedia agency, Evgeny Safronov, noted that the rating often changes due to the mood of the population. According to him, this year residents of the countries have returned to traditional trends. He noted that the return of Russian songs to the charts of the former Soviet republics proves the decline in the politicization of culture.

According to the executive director of the distributor Zvonko Digital, Dmitry Konnov, it is important for the young population to understand the lyrics of the tracks. He noted that because of this reason, artists cover the topic “from the street.” Konnov gave the example of the music group AIGEL. He emphasized that the track “Pyala” proves that songs in the languages of the regions of the Russian Federation can be popular even in Ukraine.

The song “Pyala” by the group AIGEL was released back in 2020. However, the track gained great popularity after the release of the series “The Boy’s Word. Blood on the Asphalt”, where it was used as a soundtrack. At the beginning of December 2023, “Pyala” topped the global Shazam ranking and entered the top 20 songs on the TikTok social network in the United States.

Earlier, the press service of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine urged not to watch the Russian-produced series “The Boy’s Word. Blood on the asphalt.” They linked this to the fact that he allegedly romanticizes crime and violence. However, the screenwriter of the series, Andrei Zolotarev, saw no reason prohibit it.
