Emergency services assisted residents in the aftermath of the missile strike

At least six people, including a 10-year-old girl and her mother, were killed in a Russian missile attack on the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih.

Ukraine’s interior minister said 69 others were injured when rockets hit a high-rise building and a university on Monday.

And the governor of the region, Sergei Lysak, declared a day of mourning for the victims.

Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of President Volodymyr Zelensky, has been a constant target for Russian strikes.

In June, 11 Ukrainians were killed and 28 wounded in the city after Russia launched a “massive missile attack” on civilian buildings.

Following the latest attack, dozens of people were taken to hospital, including children between the ages of 4 and 17.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who grew up in a city of 600,000, said two missiles hit an apartment building and a university building early Monday morning.

A video released by Zelensky showed that a large part of the high-rise building was completely destroyed by the strike, with a large crack in the building.

Ukrainian officials said that about 150 people managed to escape from the site of the raid unharmed.

The Ukrainian president said on the Telegram application that more than 350 people took part in the rescue operations, and the region’s governor later said that emergency teams had rescued 30 people from the building.

Zelensky added that dozens of people were traumatized by the attack, but vowed: “This terrorism will neither frighten us nor break us.”

In recent weeks, Russia has stepped up its attacks on civilian targets, and Mykhailo Podolyak, Zelensky’s chief adviser, has accused Moscow of carrying out “genocidal” attacks on Ukrainians.

Podolyak wrote on Twitter: “International law will never work if the aggressor does not see real power behind it. Power begins by closing Ukrainian airspace with missile defense and air defense systems.”

While Moscow has consistently denied targeting civilian targets.

But Western leaders, including US President Joe Biden, have accused Russia of repeatedly bombing areas that “have no military purpose”.

About 350 people worked to rescue people trapped by the recent strikes on Kryvyi Rih

The United Nations has recorded more than 25,000 Ukrainian civilian casualties since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February last year, but the real figure is likely to be much higher.

In the southern Kherson region, Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andrei Yermak, said four people were killed in what local officials described as “ruthless Russian bombing”.

A drone attack was reported in the Russian border region of Bryansk, where Governor Alexander Bogomaz said a police station was hit.

Russian officials said Saturday that three Ukrainian drones were shot down in Moscow, the latest in a series of drone attacks on the Russian capital.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin blamed Ukraine for the attack, which damaged two office buildings, although there were no casualties.

Zelensky warned against pushing the war into Russian lands, and that the attacks on Russian lands are “an inevitable, completely natural and just process” to complete the war that Moscow started between the two countries.
