Russian Missile Attack in Ukrainian Village: 53 Civilians Killed, Accusations of Targeted Terrorism

Russia has admitted that its missile hit the cafe and shop in the Ukrainian village of Groza, killing 53 people and leaving five others missing. “At the time of the attack, there was a funeral there for one of the high-ranking Ukrainian nationalists. Of course, many of his neo-Nazi associates took part in it. It is no coincidence that in the photos published on social networks immediately after the attack, almost all the bodies were of men of mobilization age.” , said the Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN, Vasiliy Nebenzya.

On October 5, the Russian military attacked the village of Groza, Kharkiv region. Two Iskander rockets hit a grocery store and cafe where the memory of Andrey Kozyr – a local resident who served in the Armed Forces of Ukraine – was being commemorated. He died near Popasna at the beginning of the Russian invasion, but since his native village had been occupied for a long time and had only recently been liberated, his son decided to rebury him there. Kozir’s entire family died in the impact – his son Denis with his wife Nina and her mother Lyudmila, his wife Alina and her parents, his uncle Anatoly with his children Igor and Olga, as well as their grandson – eight-year-old Ivan. About 330 people live in the village of Groza, and almost every family there is blackened. In some houses there are two or three dead.

The number of dead may increase, as the authorities have not yet identified some remains, according to a statement by the head of the investigative department of the police in the Kupyan region of the Kharkiv region, Sergey Bolvinov. Local residents have filed applications for 22 missing persons, and experts are studying 135 body fragments.

The authorities in Ukraine accused Russia of a targeted terrorist act against the civilian population.

Immediately after the strike, journalists from foreign media and representatives of the UN arrived in the village of Groza, who confirmed that the dead were citizens and not soldiers. “These are the barbaric consequences of this war, when 20% of the inhabitants of a village can be killed in a few seconds while they are shopping or drinking coffee with their relatives. This is a remote village. This is civilian infrastructure. These were peaceful residents . Such actions are violations, gross violations of international humanitarian law,” wrote on Twitter the coordinator of the UN humanitarian aid in Ukraine Denis Brown, who was part of the group sent to Groza to gather information about the tragedy.

Journalists from the Washington Post also confirmed that only one body in military uniform was among the dead. All others were citizens.
