“Russian Missile Attack Hits US-Made Patriot Defense System in Ukraine’s Capital City, Kiev”

Missile barrage Russia hit Ukrainian territory. The US-made Patriot missile defense system in Ukraine was damaged, but not destroyed by the attack.

Reported CNN Wednesday (17/5/2023), a series of Russian missile attacks in and around the capital city of Kiev occurred on Tuesday (16/5) morning local time. This was conveyed by a US official who declined to be named.

The US official told CNN that Washington was still assessing how much damage was done to the Patriot missile defense system.

The assessment will determine whether the air defense system needs to be fully withdrawn or can be repaired on site by Ukrainian forces.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defence Russia in a Telegram statement on Tuesday (16/5) local time claimed that “a high-precision attack by the Kinzhal hypersonic missile system on the city of Kiev hit a US-made Patriot anti-aircraft missile system”.

A spokesman for the US National Security Council declined to comment and asked CNN to check with the Ukrainian government.

Ukraine Claims Successfully Shot Down Russian Missile

In a separate statement, Kiev officials said their country had successfully shot down all six of the hypersonic missiles fired by Russia. But the Ukrainian military declined to comment when asked to comment on Moscow’s claim that a Patriot missile system was hit by them.

“We cannot comment on this. We will not comment on Russian sources,” said Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yurii Ihnat.
