Russian Ministry of Property Seizes Cathedral of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine in Simferopol on Legal Grounds

Russian Ministry of Property and Land Relations of Crimea stated that the “liberation” of the Cathedral of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine in Simferopol takes place on legal grounds.

The Ukrainian church used the temple on the basis of a real estate lease agreement dated November 13, 2002, according to the Ministry.

“Within the established deadlines, the UCA UOC-KP has not brought the constituent documents in line with the legislation of the Russian Federation, the necessary information has not been entered into the Unified State Register of Legal Entities,” the message says.

In this regard, the department filed a lawsuit with the Russian-controlled Arbitration Court of Crimea to terminate the above lease agreement, return the property and collect penalties in court. The court granted the claim.

On Thursday, Andriy Shchekun, a journalist and editor-in-chief of the Krimska Svitlytsya newspaper, said that the cathedral of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine was being seized in Simferopol. The Orthodox Church of Ukraine has not yet commented on this situation.

In February 2022, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine decided to transfer the property of the Cathedral of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir and Princess Olga in Simferopol to state ownership.

In August 2020, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) appealed to the Russian authorities over the harassment of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine in Crimea. The Russian authorities maintain that there is no religious harassment in Crimea.

In the Cathedral of Saints Equal-to-the-Apostles Vladimir and Olga in Simferopol, the community of the Crimean diocese of the UOC-KP, which has transferred to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), holds services.

In February 2019, the Russian Ministry of Property and Land Relations of Crimea demanded that the cathedral building be vacated, explaining this by the expiration of the contract with the Crimean diocese of the UOC-KP.

On June 28, 2019, the Russian-controlled Arbitration Court of Crimea ordered the premises of the cathedral to be transferred to the use of the Russian Ministry of Property of Crimea. Archbishop of the Crimean diocese of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine Kliment said he would appeal this decision.

Later, construction work began in the building of the temple, initiated by the Ministry of Property of Crimea and without the consent of the Crimean diocese.
