MOSCOW – Since the invasion Russia to Ukraine in February 2022, reportedly having lost many generals and top commanders in the conflict.
The UK Ministry of Defense said in May 2022 that senior Russian commanders were even being transferred to the front to personally lead operations while the invasion stalled.
However, the long-range missiles supplied by the West in the past year, including HIMARS and Storm Shadows, have allowed Ukraine to target Russian officers even if they are farther back.
On July 12, 2023, it was reported that Lieutenant General Oleg Tsokov, the highest-ranking Russian officer killed so far in the conflict, by a Storm Shadow strike.
Here are 14 Russian military generals who were killed by the Ukrainian army.
1. Andrei Sukhovetsky
Major General Andrei Sukhovetsky was the first Russian military official to die after being reported killed by sniper fire.
Sukhovetsky is commander in chief of the Russian 7th Airborne Division and deputy commander of the 41st Combined Arms Forces.
2. Vitaly Gerasimov
Major General Vitaly Gerasimov became the second senior Russian commander to be reported dead after Ukrainian military intelligence claimed he was shot dead in Kharkiv.
However, his death was later disputed by Russia, and Russian media reported that he was still alive and awarded the Order of Alexander Nevsky.
3. Andrey Kolesnikov
The Ukrainian military said in a tweet that it had killed Russian Major General Andrey Kolesnikov. He is believed to be the commander of the 29th Combined Arms Army.
