“Russian Military Commanders Killed in Battle on Bakhmut Front in Eastern Ukraine”

BAKHMUT, KOMPAS.com – Russia’s Ministry of Defense announced on Sunday (14/5/2023) that two of its military commanders were killed in battle on the Bakhmut front, eastern Ukraine.

In this rare announcement, the Russian Ministry of Defense said that the commander of the 4th motorized rifle brigade, Vyacheslav Makarov, and the deputy commander of the Army Corps for military-political work, Yevgeny Brovko, died on the battlefield.

The announcement came as the battle raged for control of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region.

Colonel Makarov was killed when his brigade repelled a Ukrainian attack south of the Krasne settlement, the Russian Defense Ministry said, quoted by the AFP news agency.

“Two enemy attacks were thwarted,” the statement continued. “During the third attack was repulsed, the brigade commander was seriously injured and died in evacuation from the battlefield.”

Meanwhile, Brovko was killed when Russian forces repelled an attack elsewhere. The Russian Defense Ministry said he “died a heroic death, having received multiple shrapnel wounds”.

Referring to the Wagner mercenary group, Moscow said that the assault detachments were continuing to try to take control of the western part of Bakhmut with the support of the airborne troops.

“Over the past few days, the enemy made massive efforts to break through the defenses of our troops north and south of Artemovsk,” the ministry said, referring to the Russian name for Bakhmut.

“All attacks by the Ukrainian armed forces were repulsed,” he claimed.

Russia closed its loss figures in Ukraine.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said last year that 5,937 Russian troops died in Ukraine, while military analysts say Moscow is trying to hide the scale of its defeat in Ukraine.
