According to reports from Reuters and Agence France-Presse, Russian authorities said that Prigozin was on the passenger list of a private plane that crashed in a region north of Moscow on the evening of the 23rd. There were no survivors on board.
“We have seen reports of the crash … and no one will be surprised if it is confirmed to be true,” White House National Security Council (NSC) spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said in a statement.
Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas told CNN: “If true, it shows that Putin will destroy his opponents, which is a source of horror for anyone who wants to express dissent.”
Alicia Kearns, MP and chair of the parliamentary foreign affairs committee, wrote on social media platform X: “A plane from Moscow to St Petersburg crashed with Priggin on board, Russian government confirms The speed of things tells us all we need to know. Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau said on TVP Info, the news channel of Polish television (TVP): “It is difficult for us to say that anyone intuitively believes that this is just a coincidence. Political opponents who are regarded by Putin as a threat to his power are often killed. Not simple.”
Prigozin launched a mutiny against top Russian defense officials in June this year, but it ended quickly, after which some Wagner Group fighters relocated to Belarus.
Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya in exile said on social media: “In Belarus, no one will miss the criminal Prigozin. He was a murderer and that’s how he should be remembered. He His death could unravel Wagner’s deployment in Belarus and reduce the threat to our country and our neighbors.”
On the communication software Telegram, the “Grey Zone” (Grey Zone) channel associated with the Wagner Group posted a message: “The head of the Wagner Group, the hero of Russia, the true love of the motherland Prigozin, died due to the actions of Russian traitors. … But even in hell he excelled! Glory to Russia!”
