Russian Mercenaries From Wagner Group Kill and Disappear Dozens of Civilians in Mali: Human Rights Watch Report

The armed forces and foreign fighters, believed to be from the Russian mercenary group “Wagner”, have killed and made several dozen civilians disappear in the central region of Mali since December 2022, reports the organization “Human Rights Watch” (HRW).

The organization states that the military forces have destroyed and looted the property of civilians, as well as tortured prisoners in army camps.

In Africa, the group is present in the Central African Republic, Mali and Burkina Faso, where “Wagner” helps support anti-Western governments in exchange for natural resources available in the regions.

“Delphi” previously reported on Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s statement that “Wagner” operations in Mali and the CAR will continue, despite the rebellion launched by the group’s leader Yevgeny Prigozhin in Russia.

Since the arrival of “Wagner”, the number of victims has tripled

Last year, French military forces fighting jihadists in the Sahel region halted their operations and announced the end of Operation Barkhane. Operation Barkhane began in January 2013, when France launched a military intervention at the request of the Malian government to stop jihadist violence in the country.
