The Russian Luna-25 rocket crashed into the moon on August 20. As reported by the state space agency Roskosmos, “the probe entered an uncontrolled orbit and ceased to exist as a result of a collision with the surface of the moon.”
The Russians said in a statement that a specially appointed inter-ministerial commission will investigate the causes of the unexpected event. The results of her research were presented by the head of the state space agency, Yuri Borisov.

Borisov said in an interview with Rossiya 24 television that “the Luna-25 engine did not turn off on time” – instead of 84 seconds, the machine worked for 127 seconds, which was the direct cause of the accident and the satellite crashing on the Earth’s surface.
The head of Roskosmos tried to justify the failure of the mission, claiming that the failure was the result of “Russia’s 50-year break in lunar programs.” “We have to master the technology again, without that no one can give a guarantee,” he said.
Despite the failure of the Luna-25 project, Borisov assured that “Russia must definitely participate in the race to the moon.”
Evacuation of the village and unexplained malfunction on board
The start of the Russian project took place on August 11. To carry it out, the village of Shakhtinskiy was evacuated to eliminate the risk of the rocket falling into residential areas.
Although the mission was successfully launched and no one was hurt, Roskosmos reported the mission’s problems the day before the rocket crashed.
“During the operation of transfer to the pre-departure orbit, an emergency situation occurred on board the automatic station, which did not allow the maneuver to be performed with the specified parameters,” Roskosmos reported on Saturday, quoted by TASS.
Roskosmos did not provide details of the failure at the time, but assured that the situation would be investigated by its specialists.
Russia vs India
Luna-25 was supposed to land on the moon on Monday. The timing of the probe’s landing was of great importance to the Russians, as the former Cold War space power is in a race with India on this issue. Loader Chandrayaan-3 is about to descend to the lunar surface on Wednesday.
The launch of Luna-25 was originally planned for October 2021, however, it was delayed by almost two years. NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) were initially to join the operation as they wanted to test their Pilot-D navigation camera. However, cooperation with Western agencies was interrupted due to the invasion of Ukraine.
The task of the probe was to study the lunar surface and check whether there is ice on the craters in the region of the south pole. The possible presence of water could be extremely important when planning future manned missions to the moon.
