Russian Judge Kirill Gevorgyan Fails to Secure Re-election to International Court of Justice

Judge from Russia Kirill Gevorgyan was unable to be re-elected for another term to the renewed composition of the International Court of Justice, according to the organization’s website.

How notes “Mediazona” is the first composition of the International Court of Justice, which, since the beginning of its work in 1946, has not included a representative of the USSR or Russia.

Gevorgyan was a member of the court since 2015, and since 2021 he has served as its vice president.

The four new judges of the International Court of Justice are Bogdan Lucian Aurescu from Romania, Sarah Hull Cleveland from the United States, Juan Manuel Gomez Robledo Verduzco from Mexico and Dire Tladi from South Africa.

The International Court of Justice was established in The Hague in 1945 and began work in 1946. The Court resolves legal disputes between states and provides advisory opinions on legal issues referred by other UN bodies.

The court consists of 15 judges whose term of office is nine years. Every three years, one third of the judges are elected—five seats. There cannot be two representatives from the same country on the same court. To be elected, members of the court must receive an absolute majority of votes in the General Assembly (97 votes) and the Security Council (eight votes) of the UN.

After the start of a full-scale invasion by Russian troops, Ukraine filed a lawsuit against Russia at the International Court of Justice. Kyiv claims that Moscow used a “distorted concept of genocide” as a pretext for starting the war. Thirty-two other countries have joined the lawsuit. The court began considering the case in September 2023. The court itself demanded that Russia stop the war in Ukraine.
