“On January 6, Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III spoke with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. They discussed risk mitigation near Ukraine’s borders,” a statement posted on the Pentagon’s website says.
The Russian Defense Ministry limited itself to stating that Shoigu and Austin in a telephone conversation “discussed security issues of mutual interest.”
