Russian Intervention and Election Violations in Serbia: European Parliament Rapporteur Raises Concerns

“The hooligans who caused disturbances at last night’s protest in front of the Municipality in the city are connected to the authorities,” declared the rapporteur of the European Parliament for Kosovo, Viola von Kramon, commenting on yesterday’s disturbances at an otherwise peaceful demonstration of the opposition in the Serbian capital, Belgrade.

According to the Serbian authorities, 8 police officers were injured, two of them seriously, and the police waited three hours before reacting to the provocations.

According to Viola von Kramon, “this would fit in with the Russian intervention.”

She recalled the so-called “titushki” – Russian agents in Ukraine who supported the Ukrainian security services during the rule of Viktor Yanukovych, often posing as street or football hooligans, creating provocations and occasions for violence and arrests of the pro-European, and later and anti-government political rallies in Kyiv during the so-called Euromaidan in 2014.

“That would also fit into the Russian intervention. The headlines attributed the violence to the protesters. Agents provocateurs. A classic KGB handbook. Now it would be important to keep the peace on all sides and not to incite further violence,” stated Viola von Kramon.
