Russian Intentions Revealed: Putin’s Quest for New Territories

Comment of political expert Vladimir Volya for UNIAN agency:

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu recently announced in Beijing that the Russian Federation is ready for talks on Ukraine, but added that conditions for them have not been created.

When Russian leaders go abroad, they start talking about peace and express a willingness to negotiate. In this way, they want to show constructiveness and present themselves to the world not as aggressive savages, but as doves of peace.

But in reality, all Vladimir Putin wants is new territories.

Putin and Lavrov have repeatedly said they welcome China’s peace proposal. These statements are flattering to China, on whose favor Russia depends to a great extent. But in reality, the Russian Federation’s position differs from what the Kremlin has said about supporting peace initiatives. For the Kremlin, the only acceptable point in the Chinese proposals is for Ukraine to stop fighting and agree to negotiations. This will enable the Russian army to gain a foothold in the occupied Ukrainian territories. Moscow praises the Chinese initiative because it is very dependent on Beijing.

The reality is that Russia is not interested in any Chinese (how “peaceful” this Chinese plan is is another question, because it does not mention withdrawing Russian troops from Ukraine) or any other peace proposal. Russia only wants new territories.
