Russian Influence in Africa: Wagnerites and Mercenaries

Analysts write that on August 27, the Russian Ministry of Defense ordered Wagner in Syria to leave the country or join the Russian armed forces. Currently, there are more than 1,500 Wagnerites in the country and about 3,000 more Syrians working for PMCs. Russian military bloggers stated that it would be more profitable for mercenaries to transfer their assets to Iran than to the Russian Defense Ministry.

“Wagnerites” in Africa

Russia maintains influence on African countries through propaganda and Wagner PPK militants. For example, in Sudan, mercenaries are suspected of transferring weapons to the Rapid Reaction Forces, which have been fighting with the country’s regular army for several months.

Recently, CNN published a material in which it admits that Ukraine may be involved in attacks on SSR forces. The Main Intelligence Directorate stated that they “can neither confirm nor deny” this statement.

In addition, some of the mercenaries transferred to Belarus decided to sign contracts and leave for Africa due to lack of funding from the Russian Federation. The Center for National Resistance reported that they would go to Libya, Sudan, Niger, Mali, Central African Republic and others.
