Russian Hackers Shutdown Kyivstar, Ukraine’s Largest Telecom Provider: Cyber Attack Paralyzes Telecom System and Air Raid Sirens

The shutdown of the network of Kyivstar, Ukraine’s largest telecom provider, is the work of Russian hackers. The Russian group Solntsepyok claims this on Telegram. The cyber attack took place on Tuesday.

The hack paralyzed large parts of the telecom system in Ukraine, including mobile telephony. The air raid sirens also did not work in certain areas. In the Kyiv region, the police therefore drove around to keep the public informed of possible air raids through their loudspeakers.

Solntsepyok has ties to Russia’s intelligence services, according to the Reuters news agency. Russia itself has not yet responded to the Kyivstar hack, but generally denies any involvement in such hacks. Ukrainian authorities are investigating the cyber attack: “Responsibility has been claimed by a Russian group whose activities are associated with Russian intelligence.”

According to Solntsepyok, the attack is aimed at Ukrainian forces. The Ukrainian army would use the services of Kyivstar. “To all others helping the Ukrainian armed forces: be prepared!” the group said in a statement.

The hackers thanked ‘concerned colleagues’ at Kyivstar. This indicates possible involvement from within the telecom provider. The Ukrainian authorities have therefore also opened an investigation into possible betrayal of employees.
