Russian Hackers Gain Access to Email Addresses of 632,000 US Federal Employees: Report

According to estimates by the US Office of Personnel Management, cyberattackers with ties to the Russian Federation were able to gain access to the email addresses of about 632,000 federal employees in the Departments of Defense and Justice during attacks this year.

This is stated in the department’s report, which I read Bloombergreports “European Truth”.

As a result of the cyber incident, which occurred on May 28 and 29, hackers took advantage of a vulnerability in the MOVEit file sharing service and gained access to government email addresses, links to government employee surveys, and internal data from the US Office of Personnel Management.

Employees of the US Department of Justice and various departments of the Department of Defense were affected: the Air Force, the Army, the US Army Corps of Engineers, the office of the head of the Pentagon, the Joint Staff and several other defense agencies.

The agency described the hack as a “major incident” but said it had no reason to believe it posed a significant risk and that the compromised data was “generally of low sensitivity.”

The attack was blamed on a Russian-speaking hacker group called Clop, or Cl0p, believed to be linked to Russia. In total, more than 2,500 organizations in the United States were affected by its actions.

Grouping earlier claimed responsibility for the cyber attack in particular the BBC, British Airways, oil giant Shell and the state authorities of Minnesota and Illinois.
