Russian Hacker Group NoName057 Blocks Bulgarian Parliament Website and Varna Port After Ukraine Armored Vehicle Aid Announcement

The Russian hacker group NoName057(16) has announced that it has blocked access to the internet site of the Bulgarian parliament and the port of Varna. The reason – Bulgaria’s intention to give Ukraine 100 armored vehicles from the time of the Revival process.

The attack was announced already on Friday evening by the deputy from “Democratic Bulgaria” Ivaylo Mirchev. On his Facebook page, he wrote that “the website of the parliament is currently under a Russian DDoS attack”.

“Bulgaria has prepared for Ukraine a pact with 100 units of armored vehicles. Therefore, the website of the Bulgarian National Assembly received several hundred thousand DDoS missiles from us,” the group explains on its Telegram channel. Then he adds: “Victory Za nami!”

In March of this year, the same group paralyzed the website of the French Senate, several institutes and the naval company Naval Group.

This is another hacker attack on the page of Bulgarian institutions. In April, there were attacks on the websites of the SJC and the government. In November last year, the websites of the intelligence services of Bulgaria, Estonia, Poland, Romania and Moldova were attacked. The Russian hacking group KILLNET then claimed responsibility.

A DDoS attack is a denial of access to a website. In this type of attack, within a short period of time (about a second), millions of requests to access a certain site are generated.

A check by Mediapool as of 8 a.m. Saturday shows that the National Assembly page is still down.

Around noon, the website of the National Assembly was already working. It is being clarified where the attack came from, he said the Minister of e-Government Alexander Iolovski in front of Nova TV.

“We need to consolidate efforts so that all state institutions fall under one common protection in order to have working sites and services. At the moment, the state has made enough investments”he stated.

Iolovski added that in the last 12 months, nearly 80 similar attacks like the one against the Parliament’s website have been reported. “The biggest one was last month that no one knew about. That means the defenses are working.”added the minister.

On Friday, Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov commented on the topic of the new military aid to Ukraine of 100 armored personnel carriers from Bucharest. He explained that the machines are not from the contingent of the Bulgarian army, but were purchased in the 1980s and are in warehouses of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

“They were never used, never even exercises were done with them. They just sit in the warehouses. But from this point of view, they are a burden both for the ministry and for Bulgaria as a whole. During the visit of President Zelensky, they were discussed. We asked them if they would be of any use, they said yes, so we are preparing them to be sent there.”Denkov said.

On Thursday, a draft decision was submitted to the parliament to provide new military aid to Ukraine in the form of equipment from the warehouses of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The leaders of GERB-SDS, PP-DB and DPS have signed under it as importers. Importers are Boyko Borisov, Mustafa Karadayi, Delyan Peevski, Kiril Petkov, Atanas Atanasov, Ivaylo Mirchev, Desislava Atanasova and Hristo Gadjev.

In their reasons, they state that this technique “is no longer necessary for the Bulgarian state, but it can be a serious support for Ukraine in its battle to preserve its independence and territorial integrity after the unjustified and unprovoked Russian aggression”.

The initiators point out that the storage of the armored vehicles in the warehouses of the Ministry of the Interior and the Gendarmerie cost thousands of BGN over the past 25 years. The proposal is to gift the armored vehicles to Ukraine.

“After the visit of President Zelensky and the review by the institutions in Bulgaria, what can be provided by the Bulgarian side to Ukraine, which can work in the conditions of war and to help Ukraine protect its territorial integrity and recapture the occupied territories on the part of the Russian Federation, we understand that it is possible for Bulgaria to provide and will provide more than 100 pieces of armored equipment, which is no longer necessary for the Bulgarian gendarmerie and for the needs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs”commented Daniel Mitov, quoted by BTA, after the news was first reported by Ivaylo Mirchev a day ago.
