After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Norwegian pilots flying over Finnmark have registered a massive increase in GPS interference from the neighboring country.

The National Communications Authority (Nkom) records the number of days pilots report GPS violations from Russia.

In 2019, jamming was recorded for only six days, while in 2021, the last year before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, there were 18 days, writes Today’s business.

In 2022 and 2023 there were 122 and 294 days of jamming respectively.

– Just so far this year up to and including 22 February, disturbances have been recorded for 44 days in the airspace in Finnmark, says senior engineer Nicolai Gerrard at Nkom.

In a letter Nkom has sent to its sister organization in Lithuania, it is emphasized that the jamming takes place in the northernmost part of Finnmark. They further write that the problem has been raised with the Russian authorities.

“The Norwegian prime minister has discussed this with the Russian president, but without any apparent improvement,” it says.
