Russian Government Approves New Regulation Requiring Biometric Data in Passports

The Russian government has approved a new regulation on the passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation, which stipulates that biometric personal data will be indicated in the documents. The corresponding resolution was published on the legal information portal.

“In a passport, issued in the form of a document containing an electronic storage medium, determined by a regulatory legal act of the President of the Russian Federation, biometric personal data is indicated. They will be contained on an electronic storage medium (digital photographic image of the passport holder’s face),” written in the resolution.

According to the General Director of the Center for Biometric Technologies Vladislav Povolotsky, in 2024 a service may be launched in Russia with the help of which it will be possible to buy alcohol and tobacco products without documents, confirming your age using biometrics. In six cities of the country they plan to introduce subway passage according to biometric parameters.
