TASS, December 31. Washington lost to Nashville at home with a score of 2:3 after a shootout in the regular season match of the National Hockey League (NHL).

Beck Malensteen (11) and Alexander Ovechkin (35) scored for Washington; another goal by the Russian striker was not counted after a challenge from the Nashville coach.

The 21-year-old Nashville goalkeeper, Russian Yaroslav Askarov, saved 27 out of 29 shots and was recognized as the first star of the meeting.

Askarov became the 171st goalkeeper Ovechkin scored against in the NHL. Only two hockey players have scored more goals against goalies – Czech Jaromir Jagr (178) and Canadian Patrick Marleau (177).

Ovechkin broke a three-match streak without scoring and scored his 829th goal in the regular season, reducing the gap with the record holder for this indicator, Canadian Wayne Gretzky, to 65 goals.

Nashville is fourth in the Central Division standings with 41 points after 37 matches.
