The victim was identified as Major General Kanamat Botashev (63).
Botashev’s death was confirmed by three of his subordinates who spoke to BBCyesterday, on condition of anonymity for security reasons.
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces earlier announced that a Russian Su-25 fighter plane had been shot down over the Luhansk region. According to the Kiev military, Botashev is the 10th Russian general to die since the invasion began.

Adviser to the head of the Interior Ministry Anton Gerashchenko released a photo of the fighter plane that was shot down. “In the distance, the remains of the Su-25 [yang] shot down by soldiers of the 3rd company of the 80th brigade in the Luhansk region caught fire an hour ago. The Stinger worked flawlessly,” he said in a commentary posting on social media on May 22, 2022.
One of Botashev’s subordinates confirmed to BBC that in Ukraine, the general carried out duties on Su-25 aircraft.
According to him, the discussion on one of the Russian Telegram channels reads; “Today Kanamat died! Popasnaya District, 8:25 a.m. …First NAR-s call, second—bomb…Stinger at the exit from the attack, mid-air explosion and…That’s it.”
NAR-s are unguided aircraft missiles.
