Russian gas is no longer flowing into the Baltic States since the beginning of April / Article

Uldis Bariss, Chairman of the Board of Conexus Baltic Grid

Bariss said that Russia’s demand to pay for its gas supplies only in rubles is a clear signal to everyone that dependence on gas supplies from Russia must be rapidly reduced, as it can no longer be relied on. In essence, Russia itself has accelerated the Baltic States’ path to energy independence.

“While there was still doubt that Russian supplies could be relied on, these events clearly show that, from a security perspective, there is no longer any confidence. From the point of view of the state’s energy security, the state must unequivocally resolve the issue of the construction of the second liquefied natural gas terminal – the shorter the period, the better, ”stressed Bariss.

The Chairman of the Board of Conexus Baltic Grid pointed out that there is currently an unusual amount of gas in the storage for this period – 7.6 terawatt hours:

“It is almost as much as Latvia [patērē] in all winter months. We are definitely not worried about the coming months, but we need to think about how to create savings for the winter in the Baltic region. ”
