Russian Foreign Ministry responded to the US and the EU on security guarantees

Sergei Lavrov

The Russian Federation received answers from the US and NATO to its demands for security guarantees. But there are discrepancies in them with the Russian position.

Russia demands an honest clarification of the position why the Western countries allegedly do not want to fulfill their security obligations. This is stated in a letter from Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, published on site departments.

In the message, Lavrov addresses his colleagues from the United States, Canada and a number of European countries and demands clarifications on his proposals for security guarantees.

Russia is seriously concerned about the growth of military and political tensions in the immediate vicinity of its western borders. On December 15, 2021, the Russian side presented draft documents – the Treaty between Russia and the United States on security guarantees and the Agreement on measures to ensure the security of Russia and NATO member states. Received 26 January 2022, the responses of the United States and NATO to our proposals testify to significant differences in the understanding of the fundamental principle of security for the entire architecture of European security,” the letter of the Russian minister says.

RF requires clarification of these issues.

Lavrov added that the Russian side wants a “clear answer” to the question of how the West understands its obligation not to strengthen its own security at the expense of the security of other states.

He asked how Western governments intended to fulfill that obligation.

“We expect a prompt response … If you refuse this obligation, please clearly communicate this,” Lavrov added at the end of his message.

Putin responded to US security guarantees

On Tuesday, February 1, the head of the US State Department, Anthony Blinken, had a telephone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Parties discussed the security situation around Ukraine. Blinken reminded Lavrov of US support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, and that the nations of the world have the right to independently determine foreign policy and form alliances.
