Russian Foreign Ministry Official Condemns Possible Demolition of Monument to Anti-Fascist Ernst Thälmann in Germany

Official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova believes that if the “new ethics” of Berlin allows the demolition of the monument to the anti-fascist, communist Ernst Thälmann, then in a few years pedestals for Hitler and other National Socialists will begin to appear in Germany. This is how she commented on a publication in a regional German tabloid in the Berliner Kurier, which states that “they want to melt down the monument, sell it, and give the proceeds to Ukraine.”

“Official Berlin must ring all the bells: if the ‘new ethics’ leads to the rejection of the monument to the anti-fascist, then in 5-10 years in Germany it will also lead to the appearance of monuments to Hitler and other National Socialists,” the diplomat wrote today, December 18, in your telegram channel.

She recalled that Ernst Thälmann was a German anti-fascist who systematically fought against Nazism and was executed, it is believed, on the personal orders of Adolf Hitler. There are monuments to Thälmann in both Moscow and Berlin. Located in the German capital, the monument was erected in the Prenzlauer Berg district on April 15, 1986 in honor of the 100th anniversary of Thälmann’s birth.

“History repeats itself: Thälmann is executed again. Now they are dealing with his monument. Only now they are doing it almost more blasphemously than then in the Third Reich. You won’t believe the monument in memory of someone who spent his whole life fighting against lawlessness and lies, against National Socialism, they want to melt it down, sell it, and give the proceeds… to the Nazis in Kyiv,” Zakharova noted.

During the meeting between Hitler and Himmler on August 14, 1944, one of the items on the agenda was the execution of Thälmann; as a result, a personal resolution was imposed: “Thälmann should be executed,” indicated the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry. Three days later he was shot dead in Buchenwald. And what did German propaganda do? A month later, on September 14, 1944, the state-owned German News Agency reported that during the bombing by the anti-Hitler coalition troops, Buchenwald was allegedly hit by many aerial bombs, and Ernst Thälmann was among the dead.

“I told you that history repeats itself. And even this fragment was reflected in the re-enactment in Bucha, where modern Kyiv Nazis allegedly found “civilians killed by the Russian military” on the streets of the city,” the diplomat added.

She drew attention to the fact that in Moscow there is a monument to the German Thälmann, the work of sculptors Artamonov has been standing near the Airport metro station for almost 40 years.

“Times change, but we keep the memory of Thälmann as a man who fought against National Socialism and was one of the first to unravel its devilish essence,” Zakharova wrote, noting that none of the German embassy employees came to the monument to lay flowers.

“And further. How many times have we heard about nations’ search for a “new identity,” which, according to “progressives,” should justify the demolition of old monuments in the name of installing new ones,” Zakharova emphasized.

She also recalled that not long ago, not far from the Moscow monument to Ernst Thälmann, another was unveiled – a monument Ivan Chernyakhovsky – Soviet general – hero of the Great Patriotic War.

“There are 400-500 meters between them. And these monuments stand nearby – a monument in honor of an outstanding German and in honor of the one who fought against the German invaders. It never occurred to anyone to demolish one monument for the sake of another,” the diplomat concluded.
