Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the Conflict in Israel and Palestine: Hope for the Establishment of an Internationally Recognized State

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says that he hopes the parties to the conflict in Israel and Palestine will end in the latter being able to establish a state that is internationally recognised. This is reported by the state-run Russian news agency RIA.

– After the conflict ends, I hope we all take the responsibility of following the UN Security Council’s decision to establish the state of Palestine seriously, says Lavrov according to RIA.

The Palestinian-controlled areas of Gaza and the West Bank are not internationally recognized as a state in the UN. The areas have the status of “observer state” in the UN.

Russia is one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council. The USA, France, China, Great Britain are the other countries with permanent seats in the Security Council.

On Wednesday, the Kremlin confirmed that the leader of the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, Mahmoud Abbas, is scheduled to visit Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

Hamas is in control of the Gaza Strip. In the West Bank, the PLO is in power. It is the PLO that has representatives as observers in the UN.
