Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov Urges UN Secretary General to Prevent Politicization of Ukraine Crisis

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called on UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to prevent representatives of UN structures from being drawn into politicized initiatives on Ukraine. This is stated in the message of the Russian Foreign Ministry following the results of negotiations between the parties on the sidelines of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.

“The focus has traditionally been on the most pressing international problems, as well as various aspects of cooperation between Russia and the UN. Guterres is called upon to prevent representatives of UN structures from being drawn into politicized initiatives in the context of the Ukrainian crisis,” the Foreign Ministry emphasized.

Lavrov pointed out to Guterres the US violations of its obligations, including refusals to issue visas to Russian diplomats for UN events. This situation dictates the need for Guterres to launch an arbitration procedure against the United States as soon as possible, Lavrov emphasized.

“The Minister drew the attention of the Secretary General to the continuing violations by the United States of its obligations under the UN Headquarters Agreement of 1947, including refusals to issue visas to diplomats from Russia and a number of other countries to participate in UN events. Lavrov again noted that the current situation dictates the need for Guterres to promptly launch an arbitration procedure against the United States, which has been repeatedly stated in relevant resolutions of the UN General Assembly,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement following the negotiations between the parties on the sidelines of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.

Lavrov and Guterres discussed in detail the reform of the UN to adapt the organization to modern realities.

“The topic of reforming the UN in order to adapt it to modern realities was discussed in detail, with an emphasis on Guterres’ “Our Common Agenda” initiative. The minister noted the importance of taking into account the entire range of opinions of UN member states when implementing any reform initiatives and the lack of alternative to preserving the intergovernmental nature of the world organization while respecting the “division of labor” between its main bodies,” the Foreign Ministry reported.

On Smolensk Square they added that Russia will take an active part in the relevant discussions within the framework of the “Summit of the Future” in September 2024, including in the work on its final document, the “Pact for the Future.”

Lavrov also pointed out to Guterres the inadmissibility of using double standards in UN documents in relation to different territories.

“The Minister once again emphasized the need for strict adherence by the UN leadership and all employees of the world organization, without exception, to the principles of impartiality and equidistance enshrined in Article 100 of the UN Charter. Lavrov also pointed out the inadmissibility of using double standards in UN statistical and other documents in relation to different territories,” the diplomatic department noted.
