Minister of Foreign Affairs RussiaSergey Lavrov, praised the declaration G20 under the Indian chairmanship which contained the bloc’s views regarding the war in UkraineSunday (10/9).

Lavrov said that the declaration was a breakthrough to stem Western efforts to politicize the issue of the war in Ukraine.

“This summit is a breakthrough because it provides clear guidelines to achieve these goals,” Lavrov said during a press conference on the sidelines of the G20 summit, quoted Times of India.

“I would like to express my gratitude to India for preventing attempts to politicize Ukraine,” he said.

Furthermore, Lavrov said that the G20 developing countries had the correct picture of the situation in Ukraine.

“The Kyiv regime is destroying the territorial integrity of its own country,” Lavrov was quoted as saying TASS.

“We are making this clear again, and the developing countries of the G20 clearly have a true picture of what is going on.”

Lavrov offered this praise during a press conference on the sidelines of the G20 economic forum summit in New Delhi, India, last week.

The summit was in the spotlight because it was seen as being soft on Russia, which had invaded Ukraine.

The heads of G20 member countries chose to use the terms of agreeing not to seize other territories and working towards peace.

This is different from the G20 Summit declaration in Bali which strongly condemned Russian aggression in Ukraine.

“Regarding the war in Ukraine, while recalling discussions in Bali, the leaders reaffirmed our national position and the resolutions adopted at the UN Security Council and UN General Assembly (A/RES/ES-11/1 and A/RES/ES-11 /6),” reads the G20 declaration as stated in site their official.

The UN resolution in question condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and called for the withdrawal of troops.

In this statement, the heads of state also underlined that all countries must act consistently in accordance with the goals and principles of the UN Charter as a whole.

In line with the UN charter, all countries must refrain from using violence to gain territory.

“Refrain from using violence to gain territory that is contrary to the territorial integrity and sovereignty or political independence of a country,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, in the G20 declaration last year, there was a statement that was considered more explicit in criticizing Russia.

Last year’s declaration cited a UN resolution that deeply deplored “the aggression perpetrated by the Russian Federation against Ukraine.”

“Most members strongly condemned the war in Ukraine and emphasized [perang itu] causing human suffering and worsening the global economy,” the declaration read, as quoted Associated Press.
