At his annual press conference on Thursday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov pushed for the creation of a Palestinian state as a key step in resolving the Gaza conflict. He expressed this opinion, emphasizing that the creation of such a state should be done in full accordance with the resolutions of the UN Security Council, reports CNN.
Lavrov emphasized that the Palestinian state must exist in security and good neighborliness with Israel and other countries in the region. He expressed his belief that without the creation of such a state, the Palestinian people would continue to “live in conditions of inequality and lack of justice”, which would lead to a repetition of violent incidents such as those seen in Gaza.
While acknowledging Israel’s ongoing difficulties and reluctance to accept the idea at the moment, Lavrov expressed hope that the Israeli state would eventually reach the same conclusion. He emphasized that the only way to reach a long-term solution is through direct dialogue between the Palestinians and the Israelis.
Lavrov criticized existing US mediation efforts, saying they would not lead to a real result without direct dialogue. He insisted that only direct communication and negotiations between the two peoples could lead to a real and lasting settlement.
