Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky strongly criticized Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s remarks about the Nazi leader Adolf Hitler have Jewish origins. He said it showed Moscow had forgotten or never learned the lessons of the Second World War.
“I have no words. Nobody heard any denial or justification from Moscow. All we got from there was silence, this means that the Russian leadership has forgotten all the lessons of the second World War,” Zelensky said. ReutersWednesday (4/5/2022).
“Or maybe they never learned that lesson.”
This was conveyed by Zelensky in response to Lavrov’s remarks on Italian television on Sunday when asked why Russia said it needed to ‘denazify’ Ukraine, even though President Volodymyr Zelensky is a Jew.
“When they say ‘What kind of Naziification is this if we are Jews’, I think Hitler also has Jewish origins, so it doesn’t mean anything,” Lavrov told the Rete 4 channel, speaking through an Italian translator.
“For a long time we have heard wise Jews say that the greatest anti-Semites are the Jews themselves,” he added.
Lavrov’s remarks also angered the Israeli government. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Russian Ambassador to ask for clarification.
