(CNN) The Russian-appointed acting governor of Zaporizhia region in southeastern Ukraine said on Wednesday that Russian forces had “tactically withdrawn” from the village of Robotine after surrendering it to Ukrainian forces.
CNN recently reported that Ukrainian forces had breached Russian defenses near the village of Lobotine and are now focused on increasing their gains in the area.
Russian-appointed acting governor Baritsky told local television that Robotine “is almost non-existent as a result of a large-scale, long-running battle.” “This settlement is only on the map,” he said.
Defending an empty village was not a good idea, so the Russians retreated to the hills where they had a height advantage.
Much has been written about the strategic importance of the village of Robotine for the Ukrainian counteroffensive in the south. Where once there was a village of 500 people, it is still under attack day and night.
Ukrainian sources say the current Ukrainian military is focused on expanding its stronghold near the village of Robotine, with fighting taking place a few kilometers east near Belbove.
