Russian Forces Suffer High Casualties in Ukrainian Assaults

The Ukrainian Armed Forces previously stated that in November 2023, Russian troops lost almost 11 thousand personnel in the Kupyansky, Limansky and Bakhmutsky directions. At the same time, the pace of combat operations in these directions is currently lower than in the Avdeevka area.

These casualty reports suggest that the level of Russian casualties in the Avdievka area may be even higher, given the higher pace of fighting there. Russian forces are currently conducting massive infantry assaults to capture Avdeevka, apparently trying to preserve armored vehicles despite the risk of even greater casualties.

ISW analysts suggest that Russian attempts at assaults in Ukraine as a whole are greatly depleting the Russian army.

According to several sources, Russia mobilizes from 20 to 40 thousand people monthly, and this figure may be lower than the current rate of losses of the Russian army in Ukraine. Failed assault attempts recently prompted the Russian military command to urgently send newly created and understrength units to Ukraine to reinforce sectors of the front.

Experts note that high Russian casualties will likely prevent Russian forces from fully filling existing units in Ukraine and forming new operational and strategic reserves if Russia’s force-building efforts continue at the current pace.

Key findings from ISW:

The US Department of Defense announced a new aid package for Ukraine amid the International Defense Industry Forum in Washington. The Federation Council adopted a resolution confirming that the upcoming Russian presidential elections will take place on March 17, 2024, amid the Kremlin’s ongoing efforts to legitimize the elections. Russian troops continued offensive operations on the Kupyansk-Svatovo-Kremennaya line, in the Bakhmut area and in the Avdeevka area, and made slight progress in the Avdeevka area. Ukrainian partisans and residents of the occupied territories continue to provide Ukrainian officials with information about the goals of the Russians.
