“Russian Forces Retreat by Up to Two Kilometers in Eastern Ukraine Amid Ukrainian Offensive Actions”

Russian forces retreated by up to two kilometers at some points on the front in the Bakhmut area in eastern Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, the commander of the Ukrainian ground forces, wrote on the Telegram communication platform on Wednesday. He stated that the offensive actions of the Ukrainian forces are forcing the Russian troops to retreat. According to him, in what time horizon did the Russian retreat take place, but he did not elaborate. Russia has been trying to conquer Bakhmut for several months.

According to Syrskyi, the successful conduct of the Ukrainian defense operation exhausted the units of the Russian mercenary Wagner group, which is the main Russian force in Bakhmut.

Thus, in some sections, the Wagners had to be replaced by less prepared units of the regular Russian army. But in some cases they left their positions, Syrskyj claims.

Also the spokesman of the eastern group of Ukrainian troops, Serhii Cherevaty, on Wednesday, according to the RBK-Ukraine server pointed outthat due to heavy losses in the ranks of mercenaries, Russia must increasingly send regular army soldiers to the front in the Bakhmut area.

Cherevatyj called the situation in Bakhmut difficult, but said that the Ukrainian defenders have it under control.

Last week, the head of the Wagner group threatened that his men would withdraw from Bachmut by Wednesday due to a lack of ammunition. But he said on Tuesday that the mercenaries will “stay for a few more days” and that they are starting to receive ammunition, although not in sufficient quantities.

However, on Wednesday, according to the BBC, Cherevatyj called Prigozhin’s statements about the lack of ammunition on the Russian side untrue, given that the Russians are intensively shelling Bakhmut and the surrounding area. According to him, this has happened 524 times in the past 24 hours. “So their talk about some kind of hunger for cartridges is false,” said Cherevatyj.
