It is the first time Russia has opened fire on a merchant vessel since the Black Sea Grain Agreement ended.

The Russian patrol ship Vasily Bykov fired an automatic weapon at the Sukru Okan, a cargo ship sailing north from the southwest to the Black Sea under the flag of Palau on the 13th local time.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement that it demanded that it stop for a search, but the captain did not respond and fired a warning shot to force the stop.

After warning shots were fired, a helicopter was used to board the cargo ship, and after an internal inspection, it was allowed to sail again, the Russian Ministry of Defense added.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said the ship was en route to the Ukrainian port of Izmail on the Danube River.

However, Reuters reported that Sukroocan was on his way to Romania’s Sulina port, citing data from financial information company Refinitiv.

It is the first time Russia has fired at a merchant vessel since announcing the end of the Black Sea Grain Agreement last month, Reuters reported.

Mikhailo Podolyak, adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, denounced Russia’s firing as piracy on social media.

Tensions between Russia and Ukraine over the Black Sea and nearby ports have escalated since Russia announced the end of the Black Sea Grain Agreement.

Russia attacked port towns in Odessa province in southern Ukraine on the Black Sea, destroying port facilities and grain warehouses.

Ukraine also attacked Russian warships and oil tankers with underwater drones.

Tensions are also rising in the Black Sea, with the bombing of the Crimean Bridge linking Crimea with mainland Russia.
