Russian Forces Capture City of Avdiivka After Ukrainian Troop Withdrawal

Saturday, 17 February 2024 – 19:32 WIB

VIVA – Russian Federation Armed Forces (VSRF) troops finally succeeded in capturing the city of Avdiivka in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), after the decision to withdraw Ukrainian troops was taken by Colonel General Oleksandr Sysrkyi.

Thousands of Ukrainian military troops were ordered to immediately leave the industrial city located on the eastern front, to prevent a siege by Russian troops.

This was confirmed directly by Syrskyi, who currently holds the position of Commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU).

This is also the first major decision taken by Syrskyi, after officially replacing General Valerii Zaluzhnyi on February 8 2024.

Responding to Syrskyi’s order, the Commander of the Ukrainian military’s Counter Strike Operations, Brigadier General Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, gave a positive response.

According to Tarnavskyi, his troops were on the verge of collapse as thousands of Russian troops advanced over the scattered corpses of Ukrainian soldiers.
However, Tarnavskyi confirmed that his troops would build a new defense line outside Avdiivka, which has not yet been determined.

“In a situation where the enemy was advancing over the corpses of their own soldiers with a ten-to-one shooting advantage, under constant bombardment, this was the only decision,” Tarnavskyi said.

“The siege was averted, personnel were withdrawn, and our soldiers took up defense on the designated lines,” he was quoted as saying VIVA Military from News18.

Before the order to withdraw from central command was issued, on Friday 16 February 2024, Tarnavsky also revealed the arrest of a number of his subordinates by the Russian army.

The withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the city ensured the success of the Russian military in capturing the second city in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR). Previously, Russian troops captured the city of Bakhmut (Artyomovsk) in May 2023.
