Over the past three days, pro-Russian forces have made tactical progress towards the city center of Bakhmut in Donetsk, writes the British intelligence service in its Daily report Friday.
They warn that Russian forces from, inter alia, the pro-Russian militia in the Luhansk region are likely to enter the villages of Opytne and Ivanhrad south of the city.
The forces of the Wagner Group, a private army of Russian mercenaries, have also made progress in the Donbas.
– Wagner is probably still heavily involved in the Bakhmut battles, they write in the report.
The intelligence service believes that Russia wants to capture Bakhmut to show progress in the areas near the cities of Kramatorsk and Slovyansk, which are the main population centers in the Donetsk region of Ukraine.
The Russians are preparing for urban warfare in Kherson
– Russia continues with offensive advances in the central parts of Donbas and is making slow progress. However, they are under pressure from Ukraine on their northern and southern flanks and by severe shortages of ammunition and manpower.
