– Our units have advanced significantly north-east of Novopokrovka, says a statement from Yevgeny Balitsky, the Russian installed leader in the Zaporizhzhya region, in the messaging service Telegram.
The village is located approximately halfway between the cities of Zaporizhia and Mariupol.
Balitskij says that the Russian forces “are not only holding their ground, but are gradually moving forward”.
The Ukrainian army reported on Tuesday about Russian attacks along the entire front line in the country, including in the south.
– In the Zaporizhzhya area, our defense forces have repelled three attacks in the areas north of Pryutne and west of Novopokrovka, says a daily update from the Ukrainian defense.
20 kilometers further east of Novopokrovka is the small village of Robotyne, which Ukrainian forces recaptured in August and which was held up as a success in the Ukrainian counter-offensive. But since then it has been difficult for the Ukrainians to hold on to the village, and the Ukrainian push to recapture areas that Russian forces took has subsequently gone slower than expected.
Russia controls large parts of the Zaporizhzhya region, but the region’s city of the same name is under Ukrainian control.
