President of the Russian Football Union (RFU) Alexander Dyukov said that there is still the possibility of Russia moving from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
On Thursday, a regular meeting of the RFU executive committee was held in Moscow.
— Was the issue of moving to AFK discussed? And when will it be discussed?
— This issue was not discussed. I informed about the current status of interaction with UEFA. As for the transition, such a possibility still exists. Some consultations will be held soon. After this, the issue will be considered at a meeting of the executive committee in November or December.
— You can’t say that we definitely remain in UEFA?
— The issue was not considered, no decision was made. As for UEFA, certain decisions were made at the last executive committee, in particular the lifting of the ban on the participation of our youth teams. The next executive committee will consider the issue of technical admission to the next championship. As you know, the draw has already been held. Unfortunately, UEFA did not find a technical solution to include our teams in the formed groups. At the moment, there is a decision that has been made by UEFA and FIFA, we can hope that during the draw for the Euro next season, our national team of U17 boys and girls will participate in the draw. At the moment, no one can guarantee that this will happen with reinforced concrete. The issue of participation in UEFA and other confederations was not discussed today, I repeat,” Match TV reports Dyukov’s words.
At the end of February 2022, FIFA and UEFA suspended Russian national teams and clubs from participating in international tournaments due to the situation in Ukraine. The RFU considered the possibility of moving to the Asian Football Confederation, but it was decided to create a working group with the participation of representatives of UEFA and FIFA, which would discuss the prospects of Russian football in more detail.
