The football players of Russia will play a preparatory match against Serbia on March 21 in Moscow. It will be their first meeting with a European opponent since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
After it, the International Football Federation (FIFA) and the European Football Union (UEFA) excluded national teams and clubs from Russia from all competitions. The DPA agency informed about it.
The two countries agreed on a match in December, and although Ukraine protested, there was no official objection from FIFA. So far, the Russian national team has only played friendly matches against teams from continents other than Europe, including Iran, Iraq, Cuba and Mali.
For a while, the local federation considered leaving UEFA and moving to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). However, in December of last year, the union voted against this move.
